Abstract: This study investigates whether the barriers identified in early e-commerce research differ from those found in more recent studies, and whether the categorization of these barriers has evolved over time. To achieve this objective, a comprehensive literature review was conducted, drawing from a representative sample of the most frequently cited works in the field. The findings reveal that, although the list of challenges hindering SMEs from adopting e-commerce appears extensive, the fundamental issues have remained largely consistent since the emergence of e-commerce technologies. The key implication of this research is that scholars should move beyond repeatedly identifying these barriers and instead focus on developing actionable strategies to help SMEs overcome them and fully leverage the benefits of e-commerce. This paper explores the challenges associated with e-commerce adoption in SMEs and offers practical recommendations for effective adoption and implementation strategies.
